BLOODWOOD

Bloodwood (Brosimum paraense) is found in Central and South America.  Bloodwood is a rare extremely hard and ranges from reddish brown to deep red in color.  It is a favorite among woodworkers because it is very resistant and polishes nicely.  It has a slightly brighter sound than mahogany and is in between the poplar and maple standard offerings.  It brings out balanced mids with warm articulation on the bottom and high end snap.

BOCOTE

Bocote (Cordia gerascanthus) A very rare exotic wood consisting of swirled irregular and straight grain displaying yellows, tans, browns, and black.  Found in small sizes in Mexico, Belize, and Honduras.  A truly stunning and expensive exotic.  It is fairly heavy, slightly moreso than maple.  It offers similar tonal characteristics to maple with the exception that it's straighter grain offers a slightly more balanced mid range.

BUBINGA

Bubinga (Guibourtia) also called African Rosewood, although it is not a true Dalbergia rosewood, is a very dense beautifully colored wood, whose logs can weigh over 10 tons.  Found mostly in Cameroon, Gabon, and Zaire Bubinga often displays terrific figure and is typically pink to red with streaks of purple.  Heavy and fairly expensive, mottled figure Bubinga can be very expensive.  Bubinga is a wonderful tonewood that has a wide variety of uses.  It has a great well balanced tone that offers the best of all worlds with deep yet tight bass to shimmering yet clear and smooth highs.

CLARO WALNUT

Claro Walnut (Juglans bindsii) is only found in California and is a truly beautiful walnut that is quite rare and used in the finest of items.  It displays fantastic figure and colors that range from black to white.  It is an extremely popular timber for making gunstocks and is one of the most expensive woods available in the world today.  The photo above offers a subtly streaked piece but is typical among the size required for cabinets.  Upon request and additional charge specially selected pieces of Claro can be sought that can really range in color.  Claro walnut has an excellent blend of tonal characteristics, a snappy clear register with nice warmth on the bottom and deep tone, it is somewhat similar to that associated with Rosewood.

COCOBOLO

Cocobolo (Dalbergia retusa) is a true “rosewood” which has some interesting woodworking properties.  The wood contains natural oils that not only waterproofs the wood, but makes it very easy to finish.  A true exotic originating on the west coast of Central America, it is very rare and expensive.  It is extremely dense and often exhibits a variety of colors ranging from yellow to dark browns sometimes all within the same piece.  Cocobolo offers an interesting blend of tones that are very rich and complex and also very powerful.  It offers an extremely good balance from low to high.  Highly figured pieces can be extremely expensive and only are used for custom work.  The example above is bookmatched.  Cocobolo has been used on the highest of quality instruments over time, and rivals it's brother Brazilian Rosewood in terms of sonic ability and beauty.

EAST INDIAN ROSEWOOD

East Indian Rosewood (Dalbergia latifolia) originating in India, this very hard stable wood is highly prized for its use in the finest furniture and cabinet work.  It ranges from golden brown with purple to dark brown with black, although is typically found in the darker versions.  It is known for having long sustain complicated harmonics and overtones as well as deep lush bass response.  Figured versions can have some very nice black striping against reddish brown backgrounds such as the picture above.
